Everyone Says I’m Crazy….

Posted by on April 22, 2014

Hunter S Thompson allegedly said that “‘Crazy’ is a term of art; ‘Insane’ is a term of law. Remember that, and you’ll save yourself a lot of trouble”. This poem isn’t quite so observant, but hell, it works for me.

Everyone says I’m crazy

Sometimes I  wonder if it’s true

I do the  things nobody else

Ever seems to want to do

In my heart I’m by a campfire

With a guitar every night

But everyone says I’m crazy

And that my head’s not right

Maybe everyone’s a doctor

And they all know more than I

But everyone says I’m crazy

And they never tell me why

They tell me I’m a madman

Just for wanting sometimes, to be alone

To go wandering off with a tent on my back

And not wish to answer the phone

Yeah, everyone says I’m batshit

Then spend eight hours a day in a cell

(Though no – one’s ever passed sentence)

Then an hour in a tin box, as well

They leave the house each morning

And return there every night

Sit in traffic twice a day

And tell ME my head’s not right

They pay and pay and each day, the same

And then, all of a sudden, they’re done

There’s nobody on their deathbed

Ever wishes they’d had less fun

Still listening to the same music

They heard with their mates at school

Still nodding their heads to a twenty year old beat

Still following the same old rules

Man spreads sanity like a social disease

It seems like there’s virtually no cure

There’s a hundred odd channels showing nothing at all

And they’re hungry for ways to watch more

Hell, everyone says I’m crazy

Well, who am I to judge?

I leave them in their asylum

And never bear a grudge

Yeah, everyone says I’m crazy

And they’re all swift to condemn

But I’ll take a beer

Stride above the smears

And give thanks

I’m not like them.
